Microsoft has officially announced the Xbox Nano Controller, a pocket-sized gamepad it calls its smallest controller yet. Priced at $49.99 (£44.99), the Nano is designed for "younger players, smaller hands, or anyone seeking something portable for play on the go," according to James Hunter, General Manager of Xbox Accessories.
The controller launches on November 4 across 36 markets, including the US, UK, Japan, and much of Europe. Pre-orders are available now via Xbox.com and Amazon.
Small Size, Full Feature Set
At just over 5 inches in length and 3.5 ounces , the Xbox Nano is shorter and lighter than most modern smartphones. Despite the compact form factor, Microsoft says it includes all 18 standard gameplay inputs , delivering the familiar Xbox controller layout players already know.
The Nano swaps the standard Capture Button for a programmable Action Button , which can be customized via the Xbox Accessories app for shortcuts like screenshots, gameplay capture, and other frequently used functions. Unlike the standard Xbox Wireless Controller, which relies on AA batteries, the Nano includes a built-in rechargeable battery charged via USB-C — no separate play-and-charge kit required.

Connectivity and Compatibility
The controller supports both Xbox Wireless and Bluetooth , making it compatible with Xbox Series X|S consoles, Windows PCs, iOS and Android devices, and select smart TVs. Google Fast Pair and Microsoft Swift Pair are supported for quick setup, with MFI compatibility for one-tap pairing on Apple devices.
What Microsoft Hasn't Revealed
Microsoft has not disclosed the Nano's battery life or whether it includes rumble and impulse triggers . For context, a French tech outlet estimated roughly 10–12 hours of gameplay based on the controller's ~500mAh battery capacity, which would be significantly shorter than the 30–40 hours a standard Xbox controller delivers with AA batteries. Microsoft has also not announced color options beyond the standard black shown in promotional images.
Design History: From Cloud Controller to Nano
The Nano Controller's design has an interesting backstory. The device originally leaked earlier this year as the "Xbox Cloud Gaming Controller" with what appeared to be a small integrated screen for indicating cloud or console connectivity. That screen did not make it to the final shipping model, which The Verge described as a sign that "someone at Xbox kept the product focused".
The final design features a boxier, more rectangular shape compared to the standard Xbox controller, with a USB-C port at the rear and a dedicated pairing button.

Holiday Bundles with Samsung and Meta
Microsoft is teaming up with Samsung to offer a special bundle in the US: purchasing select Samsung TVs this holiday season includes an Xbox Nano Controller and two months of Game Pass Ultimate for new members. Samsung TVs feature a built-in Gaming Hub with the Xbox app, letting players connect the Nano and stream hundreds of Game Pass titles directly.
A similar offer is in the works with Meta for Quest headsets, bundling the Nano Controller with two months of Game Pass Ultimate for new subscribers.
Cloud Gaming Context: Time Limits Coming
The Nano's launch comes as Xbox prepares to introduce monthly time limits on cloud gaming starting in November. Game Pass Ultimate subscribers will be capped at 15 hours of cloud playtime per month, Premium at 10 hours, and Essential at 5 hours, with additional hours available for purchase. The timing is somewhat awkward for a controller explicitly designed for portable and cloud gaming, though the Nano works equally well as a secondary controller for local play and couch co-op.

The Xbox Nano Controller is Microsoft's answer to a simple question: what if an Xbox controller could fit in your pocket without sacrificing the buttons you actually need? At $49.99, it's an approachable entry point for younger players, a convenient travel companion for cloud gaming, and a solid backup controller for the living room. The trade-offs — unknown battery life and the removal of rumble and impulse triggers — are worth watching, but the Nano's real appeal is its combination of portability and full-size functionality in a package that weighs less than a deck of cards.
